  • Draft Impact Revisited

I posted a number of times on Phans overvaluing what the draft can bring to a team on an immediate basis, and past that. Lat's take a look at what our team has done.

Checkout the complete draft history of Miami Dolphins starting from 1936 to present including year by year draft picks on Pro-Football-Reference.com

Here is a listing of every pick Miami has ever made for reference.

It's way too early to tell on the last three drafts, although many Phans think results are immediate. Over the last three drafts, the only impact has been from Landry and Jenkins. That's about it.

Go back to the three years before this, where you have a real evaluation. I see Tannehill, Vernon, Miller, and Matthews (three of which are FA).

I know yopu have to build through the draft but hell, should we not have gotten Lucky at least a time or two for a real Pro Bowler?

No doubt we've sucked in the draft. Pretty much explains where we are and how we got here.

Our drafting has sucked ass for a long, long time going all the way back to the end of the Shula era...It's no small wonder we can't ever climb higher than middle of the pack. One of these days we'll hopefully luck into a real GM, who has a keen eye for what a real football player really looks like!

We haven't drafted well since Bobby Beathard.
        Can we sign this guy?

You're undervaluing Ja'Wuan James, Jelani Jenkins, and Dion Sims.

They may not be stars, but each are difference makers for us. Jordan Phillips and Bobby McCain are both flashing and in the starting rotation as rookies. Billy Turner may develop yet into a stud lineman. We'll see. At least he's playing now.

Biggest disappointment has been Dion Jordan. l blame Coyles for that situation. Instead of realizing he had a stud playmaker at OLB, he tried to turn him into something he wasn't. If he wanted someone to play like Ziggy Ansah, he should have been rooting for Ansah to be drafted by us instead. That said, DJ made a number of plays of us in limited snaps each of the past 2 seasons. Hoping he get's cleaned up and that we can get him back into the fold next season.

DP, i would add long , long, long to that. In fact our ineptitude is stunning, almost like you would have to do years of real focused work to eliminate evaluation skills from an organization.

LOL... I hear ya... but again - you're not going to have probowlers at every position. The probowl is mostly a popularity contest. If it wasn't Reshad Jones would've already been to at least 1 probowl. And if you don't think those guys make a difference, go back and watch how poorly we played without first Sims and then James blocking. Jenkins is solid IMO, he just needs a stud MLB next to him.

                YMMV. ;-)

I agree about Dion Jordan. We need to move him back to the SAM LB position where Misi is now playing. He is not a DE. If we can get a quality ILB then along with Jenkins we should have a good LB corps.

I did list Jenkins. Last year, Sims caught 24 passes for 284 and 2 TD's. This year, 6 for 36, and 1 TD, with Stoneburner going 5 for 47 and 2 TD's. His blocking has improved to average. That's not a lot of production but, in limited time.

James was up and down last year at RT, and lost development time with the mess of him going to LT. From what I've seen this year, he has been inconsistent and did not improve as much as I expected before the injury. Both can upgrade next year, which is no problem with me but, not guys I would include right now.

I think our views are relative to what we're comparing them too. For me, it's a huge difference between when these guys are playing for when they aren't.

I guess I have to agree with ya Cuch. Having an average 2nd TE is a huge difference to having no 2nd TE at all.

So far this season, it's been the difference between winning games and not. ;-)

Sorted and averaged by @pfref's AV metric, the Patriots have had the fourth most success drafting in the first round since 2000.
                  1. Ravens, 2. Steelers, 3. Panthers, 4. Patriots, 5. Falcons, 29. Jags, 28. Dolphins, 30. Bucs, 31. Rams, 32. Eagles Doug Kyed added,

(profootball reference did the study) From FH.

I added that the Pats had one coach since 2000, we had eight (and counting).

This is basically the same thread as "If you could redo the draft" I just posted in. But it's not the players at all. The Steelers found a way to use Wallace. The Saints found a way to use Stills, the Browns found a way to use Cameron. The Patriots found a way to use (insert name of any schmuck here). Yet we can't find a way to use guys like Parker, Ajayi, Jordan, etc., etc.? What else are we missing? How good would guys like Tannehill, Miller and Landry be on the Patriots? What would happen if Denver had our D Line at the beginning of the season. You can't make me believe that everyone is wrong in evaluating these talents. We just don't know how to use them!
