  • Fine line between 'dirty' & 'aggressive and/or physical'

On the heels of the OV hit on Mariota, i'm pretty surprised about the backlash; not so much that his teammates are complaining and calling the hit dirty (you'd expect that reaction and backing from your team, though as i stated in a previous post i'm sure their reaction would be a helluva lot different if the shoe were on the other foot) but i am surprised that some of our own fans think the hit was cheap, dirty and even intentional..In football there is a very fine line between playing dirty and playing uber-physical and if you're not toeing that line then you're probably not winning! As many have already pointed out OV committed a foul by hitting MM below the knees, it's a foul penalized by a 15 yard personal foul penalty because that's what the rule says, you know the one implemented to protect the league's golden-boys, but take out as many knees of OLinemen that you want as there's no rule against that, but i digress..OV was penalized & he more than likely will be hit with a stiff fine (which is a joke), but for people to claim it was a cheap, dirty and even intentional shot to injure is absolutely ridiculous. Dirty is watching Marty Lyons take Dwight Stephenson's knees out from behind ending the HOF's career, dirty is guys like Conrad Dobler biting & eye-gouging, dirty is Ndamakong Suh stomping on guys while they're lying defenseless on the ground, there are probably a thousand more examples..but when a guy gets called dirty and said to be trying to intentionally injure another player for aggressively doing his job, man, i realize this isn't the same sport i grew up loving!

Even with Goodell & Company trying their hardest to put panties on offensive players & remove all physicality & violence from the game, football remains a uber-physical, violent sport. I can almost picture Goodell back in Roman times telling the gladiators 'Our aim is to make this a safer sport - There will be no more hacking off of appendages above the shoulders or below the knees!' Hey look, i don't like to see players injured, absolutely hate to see guys carted off the field or lost for the year..but every single one of these guys know what they signed up for, football is a dangerous game and there will be casualties. - Anytime you have 275-375 pound guys flying around at what amounts to blinding speed to mere mortals like us there will always be injuries, oftentimes brutal ones..and the way i see it, if you can't stand the heat then get the f#@k outta the kitchen...

I think if a defense isn't getting a few roughing penalties then they are not playing with enough intensity. That level of agression lead to 6 sacks and 2 INTs. I will take the penalty and the criticism.

I absolutely agree..I grew up in the **** Butkus, Deacon Jones, Ted Hendricks, Mike Curtis (I remember that fan running onto the field trying to take the ball and Curtis absolutely demolishing the guy!) era, where football was football (Not sure what we're watching these days) but i really hope that DC turns our soft-ass team into a team from that bygone era - As you say i'll gladly take the penalties and accusations that come with it because without that intensity we'll never be much more than a soft, mediocre team...

I think the hit was dirty and uncalled for and I believe that one hit took a little bit away from the Dolphins win. Mariota is going to miss this weeks game because of that hit. You never want to see that happen when the hit happens in a questionable way. I am not 100% sure that he deliberately went after his knee with the intent to injure him but I just got the feeling that he knew the ball was released and just wanted to be a part of the play. Vernon should save that type of play for next weeks game.

I take it Wake 4 sacks and plays clean so yeah aggressive can be done by the book! Now that's impressive.Like a comic who can roll you over without vulgarities.

I'm surprised to hear that DF..Unless i'm missing something here OV as far as i know has never had any kind of history of cheap-shots or being known as a dirty player; a guy who looks to intentionally hurt another player..I (as i'm sure you have done) have watched this play over & over & over again and i just can't see where he looks like he's intentionally going for Mariota's knees..What i see is him coming in fast, cutting the corner very sharply (maybe even being dragged a bit by Lewan, hard to tell) and lunging off-balance in Mariota's direction..I would hope like hell he's not the type of guy to do something so heinous it could potentially end a kids career..

I do like that kid Mariota (one tough SOB to stay in & play after taking that hit) and i feel bad he's gonna miss their next game..I NEVER under any circumstance like to see guys hurt, even hated Pats, Jets or Bills...

He doesn't have a history of being a dirty player. His new head coach was trying to pump these young players up and possibly Vernon took those coaching instructions too far? He is playing for a contract, I think, and more then likely if he has a good season won't be back in a Dolphins uniform because he will demand way too much money.

As Shane posted yesterday from the Phinsider, OV was slipping and being carried by him momentum, but was affected by the LT. You can also see the tackle grab his arm and pull him off balance in the replay.

We take a look at the play in which Olivier Vernon hit Marcus Mariota in the knees from the All-22 film.

If he wasn't slipping he would've hit MM at about waist level..Probably still gets the 15 yard roughing call, but all of this 'cheap-shot, dirty' talk wouldn't even be a consideration..Wonder what Whiz & the rest of the Titans would find to complain about then!

Agreed. Was wondering if Whizz wasn't harping on this to get the focus off his own teams level of play. They certainly weren't expecting the total domination we displayed. They completely took us too lightly coming out of the BYE healthy and motivated after dumping Joe...

I would have to see the video of the other angle but the pictures to paint a different picture. Since his arm was grabbed that "might" have caused him to lose his footing which caused his dive to come in much lower. Hopefully Mariota won't miss too many games and will be able to bounce back from this injury and if it was an accident, like it now appears, hopefully Vernon will only get a fine. (It's the Dolphins so you never know........"The Dolphins are playing OUR Patriots in week 6 so maybe we should suspend him for 2 games.") He will get a fine and when Mariota comes back it will all be back to normal.

yeah, i like that Mariota kid, i think he may end up being a damn good QB..

lol on the 'OUR Patriots' comment, probably be even funnier if it weren't so damn true! Don't know about anyone else but i sure wish we would've caught the Pats instead of the Titans in that buzz-saw coming out of our bye...

I see it that he was falling and the tackle definitely grabbed his arm which pulled him further down,it is just one of those plays where a lot of different factors came together .
know one wants to see a qb get injured but if you let up to early then you will never get to the qb and he will know that you give up to avoid a penalty and not fear the hard hit.
after something like this the qb now has fear in his head and it could affect his play for the rest of the game!

that I think is what campbell was talking about ,playing on the line .
of coarse once in a while like that play you find your self across the line, but I don't see DC giving him a bunch of crap for that, but I think philbin would have put him in the dog house.

As long as they aren't drawing penalties or doing things to hurt the team, I'm fine with ''aggressive'' play.
