On the heels of the OV hit on Mariota, i'm pretty surprised about the backlash; not so much that his teammates are complaining and calling the hit dirty (you'd expect that reaction and backing from your team, though as i stated in a previous post i'm sure their reaction would be a helluva lot different if the shoe were on the other foot) but i am surprised that some of our own fans think the hit was cheap, dirty and even intentional..In football there is a very fine line between playing dirty and playing uber-physical and if you're not toeing that line then you're probably not winning! As many have already pointed out OV committed a foul by hitting MM below the knees, it's a foul penalized by a 15 yard personal foul penalty because that's what the rule says, you know the one implemented to protect the league's golden-boys, but take out as many knees of OLinemen that you want as there's no rule against that, but i digress..OV was penalized & he more than likely will be hit with a stiff fine (which is a joke), but for people to claim it was a cheap, dirty and even intentional shot to injure is absolutely ridiculous. Dirty is watching Marty Lyons take Dwight Stephenson's knees out from behind ending the HOF's career, dirty is guys like Conrad Dobler biting & eye-gouging, dirty is Ndamakong Suh stomping on guys while they're lying defenseless on the ground, there are probably a thousand more examples..but when a guy gets called dirty and said to be trying to intentionally injure another player for aggressively doing his job, man, i realize this isn't the same sport i grew up loving!
Even with Goodell & Company trying their hardest to put panties on offensive players & remove all physicality & violence from the game, football remains a uber-physical, violent sport. I can almost picture Goodell back in Roman times telling the gladiators 'Our aim is to make this a safer sport - There will be no more hacking off of appendages above the shoulders or below the knees!' Hey look, i don't like to see players injured, absolutely hate to see guys carted off the field or lost for the year..but every single one of these guys know what they signed up for, football is a dangerous game and there will be casualties. - Anytime you have 275-375 pound guys flying around at what amounts to blinding speed to mere mortals like us there will always be injuries, oftentimes brutal ones..and the way i see it, if you can't stand the heat then get the f#@k outta the kitchen...
