  • Trade Deadline Thoughts- Wake & Grimes?

The NFL trade deadline is Nov. 3 and between now and then we play @ Tenn, Houst, and @ NE. I'm thinking that IF we win 2 or 3 games it is very unlikely anything happens. However, if we lose 2 or 3 games, it may get interesting.

I believe we are in for a pretty major overhaul of our roster under a new coaching staff, and do not see Wake and Grimes (among others) fitting in. I see it taking 2-3 years before we can contend with both being too old to contribute when hopefully we do.

I would look to trade both this year for a few reasons.

We would save roughly $5M on each for this year's salary.

We should get better value in trade, as the trading team only has to pay roughly $5M for each for the rest of the year, and there is no guaranteed money to deal with next year. They can also re-do their contracts with a new signing bonus if they like. I'm guessing we could get around a 3rd rounder from teams going to make playoff runs.

We take a look at the young CB's, Fede, etc.

I have to consider others like Jennings, Misi, and maybe even Albert as well.

I don't necessarily buy the 2-3 year rebuild theory. I think it's possible for a new coach to win right away. Dan Quinn is doing it this year in Atlanta. Sean Payton won right away in NO. Hat aught won immediately in SF until ownership decided they were tired of winning. So I think you can win right away and maybe these guys could help that. But I do see the value in trading them while they still have value. Tough call.
    Can we sign this guy?

It can be done but, I do not see us having the same talent level as your examples. I have to go for the picks and an additional $10M in cap space in trading this year if we are out of it.

Are we playing you today in FF? If so, looks like a good match up.

If we are 3-4 or better after the NE game then the season will still be viable and we probably won't trade anyone. If we are 2-5 or worse then I think we will look to be sellers at the trade deadline.

Right now Wake downs't have any trade value. He is 33 and doesn't have a sack so far this season. Maybe we could get a 5th round pick but his salary is so high and I don't know if another team will be willing to take on that kind of salary for a situational pass rusher.

Grimes might have decent trade value. He is still a quality corner but he is in rapid decline and he probably won't be back with the Dolphins next year anyway much like Wake so if we could get a 3rd round pick for him then I would take it.

While we may well bring in a new coach who will overhaul the roster, would it make sense to get rid of players NOW, not knowing which players the new staff would want to keep, and which they would want to shed?
More importantly, shouldn't we see what they have in them, before trying to gauge their worth on the market? Aside from parting with some dead weight, to bolster the roster for THIS season, I just can't see trying to build one now for what MIGHT happen next year...

Agreed & said the same about Wake on another thread..Pretty much par for the course...

Other than maybe another "Tuna Melt" on a quick fix, I cannot see a new coach wanting old players to rebuild with. It makes no sense.

We will see what we have over the next 3 games, and decide from there. However, from what I have seen from PLAYERS this year, I do not anticipate a turn around.

Wake has been a top 5 pass rusher, including last year. NFL teams know that, and that he has been hurt. He will bring a 3rd, and the cost for the rest of this year is $5M. Chump change if a team thinks he can help bring them to the promised land.

Other than the handful of players whose conracts would make it impossible to even think about trading i wouldn't think there would be a single player safe..Problem is that none of these guys would be worth a damn thing in trade, sigh-h-h....

I'd be VERY surprised (SHOCKED actually) if any team would offer a 3rd for Wake...Wake, hurt or not is on a downward spiral; he can't play the run even when healthy and would strictly be a situational pass-rusher..If someone were to offer a 3rd for him, i'd jump all over it!

Nov 3 is the "Time Of The Season" when Zombies (owners & GM's) become very pro-active. If you believe your team has a shot at a Super Bowl, you want to do whatever you can to get there, and a cover CB and/or a legit pass rusher may be that ticket.

Giving up a 3rd rounder, with odds at 50% of him being a player, and likely needing a few years to develop is less than lunch money. Fans really overestimate the value of picks.

Hell, IF the Dolphins were in the same position to add a player who could help bring us back to a SB, I would trade 3rd rounders for the life of the team. JK but, not by much.

As far as Wake is concerned, I am certain that his demise so far this year was not due to age. He is a proud man and has heard fans saying he has lost a step, and ESPN saying he should take his name off his jersey. I fully expet to see a RAGING BULL in Tenn to stop these talks, and would not want to be the guy or two blocking him.

I'm not sure about fans overestimating the value of picks; I agree that a 3rd would be well worth the risk for a team a pass-rusher away from contention..but i've noticed a down-trend in the way teams toss picks around like they're nothing..seems that teams are a lot more wary these days of giving away picks in hopes of making a strong push for the SB, & when all other teams look at a team like the Colts wasting a 1st rounder in that exact hope (Trent Richardson), they notice...

Maybe there are teams out there still thinking you can buy your way to a SB with the only cost being a 3rd rounder for a lame situational pass-rusher; hopefully the phone's ringing as we speak...

IF we're going that route and having a Fire sale, trade OV as well. Was hoping we'd move him each of the past 2 seasons anyway. I'm hoping Fede can can supplant him as it is.

I think we will know by the trade deadline if we should have a fire sale or not. I think Wake OV and Grimes should all be trade bait if we are so far out of the playoff race because I don't think any of them will be back next year. Wake and Grimes due to age, contract, and diminishing performance. OV just because of diminishing performance and he will be a free agent and with the way he is playing I would not resign him.

I don't think Fede is a starting DE in the NFL. He is a nice rotational player. We will probably have 2 new starting DE's next year. 1 by free agency and 1 by the draft. I think we will also draft a corner relatively high since Grimes will probably be gone.

I was hyped about OV when we took him out of the U. That said, he's done nothing but clean up work from the left overs from Wake and others. I don't see us losing anything by starting Fede over OV in the interim to see if it sparks something. IMO, Fede was clearly better than OV against the Jags... and didn't hurt us with a stupid and idiotic uncalled for penalty.
