  • What Does A Dolphins HC Do?

Things are not the same as the Shula days when he was pretty much in charge of everything. We had JJ who was big on D, Cam who was big on O. Saban who was big on DB's, and Soprano who was big on inspiring players (as per JT). Then there was Philbin. Correct me if I am wrong but, here's what I have sorted out on what he did not do, which some seem confused on.

Tannenbaum/Hickey were in charge of personnel decisions.

Lazer, by contract, was in charge of the O.

Coyle was in charge of the D.

Rizzi was in charge of special teams.

While I'm sure Philbin had some input ia all of the above, what does that leave, and what is Campbell actually taking over doing?

Dealing with the media, clock management, supervising other coaches, and inspiring players is all I can come up wi

IMO the HC is the heart & soul of the team. If the HC has some fire in the belly... then I believe that the team will have some emotions. Proof of the opposite is watching a Philbin lead team. Additionally, it is the HC responsibility to bring all the pieces together. His Staff, the players he is given add some ice and roll the dice. He should be asking for personnel that fit his vision BUT if those people are not there then he needs to modify his vision to work with the tools that he has. THIS IS WHERE PHILBAN FAILED TERRIBLY. In addition to having no fire he refused to modify his vision to maximize his players abilities.

Dealing with the media, clock management, supervising other coaches, inspiring players, make coaching staff changes, input on O, D, and STs. Just getting the players to play with fire will win a couple of games in itself.

In one word he "leads"... Sounds to simplistic, but that is what he does. He is the CEO who has final decision making ability and who holds those under him accountable when the job is not getting done. This last item was Philbins biggest failure as well as not being a "leader" who people follow.

Don't think that any assistant or coordinator is going to use a scheme, plays or philosophy that doesn't reflect the head coach. If Lazor presented a playbook to Philbin that he didn't like, he will send him back to adjust it and present it again. So everything you have seen on this team, who starts and who is on the practice squad, the shemes, philosophies, playbooks, gameplans and play calls on offense and defense are either directly or indirectly the results of the head coach. Look at the consistency of the Patriots and their coaches and coordinators have turned over many times.

I think we will all see in two weeks what a difference it can make. Our players were in protest and wanted Philbin gone, those same players will now really want to prove that they were right. These guys are starving to be aggressive. Take the muzzles off these animals and let the big dogs eat!

Agreed.... and Dan sounded pissed off about the team and fired up to get busy. I'm definitely going to be happy to ''let the dogs'' out.

Evidently a head coach avoids Miami. Hoping Campbell impresses.
