  • Patrick Surtain Says Dolphins Now Have "Philbin's Personality"

There are a lot of unsettled people in Miami right now as the Dolphins are reeling and sitting at 1-2 -- "good" for last in the AFC East. There have been issues on both sides of the ball with the team unable to stop opposing offenses or run the ball with any success at all.
Blame has been put on everyone from Ndamukong Suh to defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle, with head coach Joe Philbin being the guy taking the most heat.
Former Dolphins cornerback Patrick Surtain is one of many unhappy with Philbin's tenure in Miami, and believes he's to blame for the Dolphins' issues.
"They’re taking on the personality of the head coach right now," Surtain said via the Miami Herald." Something has to change. It has to come from a player in the locker room.
"I don’t know if there is a message. What’s the message? He’s not that vocal guy like a Jim Harbaugh or a guy like that. … Jimmy [Johnson] had us on pins and needles. You had to perform or you were out the door."
Since joining the Dolphins, Philbin has a record of 24-27 and has yet to take the team to the postseason. He's likely on the hot seat with Miami failing to meet expectations once again.

Now? Hell they have had this personality for over almost two years. Philbin made sure anyone with fire was gone. This year is going to SUCK...AT this point don't fire any of the coaches because I don't think there is ONE on this staff that could even do it in an interim basis. I have been looking over the games again and I have come to the point that Lazor is as big of a problem as Coyle. Predictable routes, doesn't allow him QB to audible and horrible blocking assignments. I know the line isn't good, but Lazor is doing them no favors.

Always wondered whether RT could call his own plays, seems like he does better at the 2 min warning....

Agree on both accounts. Lazor's been a huge disappointment as well as Coyles and the defense this season. Especially in the RZ.

EXACTLY what I've been saying for a long time now!! Bill Lazor is riding on the coat tails of Chip Kelly. Most fans were excited to see "Lazor's" brilliant version of Chip Kelly's offense to Miami. Well, we are still waiting. It never happened because "Lazor" is all hype. He IS just as worthless of a coordinator as Coyle is. V A N I L L A .......AND........P R E D I C T A B L E !!!!!!!

There is probably only one person on this staff who I kind of like, who seems to be getting the short end of the stick, and that is Hickey. He was never given a chance to run the show so we really don't know how good or bad he is at being a GM. Unfortunately, I think this entire coaching staff AND front office must go so that the Dolphins can start fresh with a new head coach and GM, with new bright ideas of how to run this team. It's a great, young team on paper and the players should get interest from good coaches, as long as it's not a partial rebuild and these coaches can't pick their own players. If that's the case the Dolphins will hire a college coach or an ex-NFL coach who is a failure. Shanahan "might" be interested in the job but I am starting to think he might be too smart to take this job especially if he gets advice from his father. "Run like the wind away from Miami" is what Mike will say.

I know you are right, but do you think any of these guys are handcuffed by Philbin as the players are? He is the boss and may not allow audibles or hurry up offense. Lazor can't over rule Philbin.

Philbin is an ex offensive line coach. I can't imagine him handcuffing ALL the coaches by completely micromanaging them so that they can't go off-script. I have no idea if I am correct, maybe he is a total control freak but I am just going off what I have 'read' and what I 'read' when watching the interaction between the coaches. I believe Lazor is all hype who lacks creativity. Again, I could be wrong but there is no way to know unless Lazor gets a chance to be an OC somewhere else. I have heard for YEARS that the Dolphins are going to run the West Coast Offense but I have yet to see it. I hope to see the 80's WCO sometime in the near future but so far all I see is a boring, vanilla offense that most teams should be able to predict what they are going to do.

I am starting to think we are cursed. It seems like whenever there is a crucial decision to be made concerning the Dolphins future such as hiring a head coach or drafting or signing a QB we always seem to make the wrong decision. In hindsight it was clearly a mistake to hire Philbin and to draft Tannehill. The way we play it certainly looks like the Dolphins have taken on Philbin's personality. I just hope that Ross gets it right when he is searching for our new HC next offseason.

I've always liked Patrick Surtain but i gotta say the guy's a little slow on the uptake if he's just now figuring this out...Maybe he should apply for a job in our Front Office!

I have believed that we're cursed for a long, long time; even the Marino years were just a tease, watching one of the best ever accomplish so much yet not even come close to winning a title..As you said, every move we make turns out to be the wrong one, thwarted at every single turn - This organization is it's own worst enemy; so mired in mediocrity that i'm not sure we'll ever dig our way out of it...In the immortal words of Jim Morrison; we've been down so Ga-Damn long that it looks like up to us...
