  • Phins Salary Cap Update

The dust on final cuts has settled, and we are $10-11M under this year's salary cap. The cap only counts the top 51 cap hits until the final roster when the last two must be added. This also includes the 8 practice squad guys @ $112K each, and Ajayi @ $500K going on the injured list.

For 2016, we are Around $2M under the cap. This is misleading as we only have 38 players under contract. We cut many cheap guys who counted in 2016. Add 15 players at $500K each, and we are roughly $5M over on next year's cap.

Will post the 2016 breakdown today or tomorrow. We are in good shape.

Are we able to carry over any of our cap space this year into next years cap? If not then that makes me even more disappointed that we didn't sign Evan Mathis. Even if he cost us $5 million we would still be $5 to $6 million under this years cap.

I think next years cap is due to rise so we will be in even better shape. The only higher priced free agents of our own we might want to resign next year are OV Miller and maybe Shelby. The bottom 10 to 15 roster spots are mostly made up of either young players who are still on their original rookie 4 year contracts or veteran minimum salary type players.

We can carry over every dollar not spent this year. We all hope injury replacements are few and we can use $7-8M for next year.

The 2016 numbers posted are based on a $150M projected cap, which allows for a $7M increase from this year. I think it will go up an additional few Mil. The bottom 15 were all in the $500k range, with most being under a little. So the $5M over is accurate as an estimate. It's very likely that many of those spots will be filled from next year's draft.
