  • OK...I just do not get this

I listen to WQAM 560 Miami Sports talk radio on my drive to work, and on my drive home (available on an app for those of you who live outside the area like me). And the number of people who are calling in and Tweeting that Brandon Doughty should be our new starter is mind boggling. I mean...I get the Tannehill frustration, but let's be real here. The kid Doughty has thrown 9 preseason passes and people want to make him the starter??? REALLY????

I think it was Bum Phillips who said that the most popular guy on a football team was a backup QB. lol...

Doughty is a local kid who was highly proficient in college. He's going to get love as he hasn't done anything one way or another in a game against starters. He has thrown a few TDs in camp against the burger flippers and he handled himself nicely against the 3s in the last game. People are wanting to see him as the next Brady Cinderella story. Growing up friends with Marino's kids and hanging at Danny's place didn't hurt either. But yeah, it's silly right now.

I like Doughty a lot and am rooting for him. I'm hoping he can beat out Moore and push Tannehill next year.

Starter is extreme. Preparing him to take over sometime mid-season may not be. Gase expects results. He is not going to accept what we have seen over the past four years. RT will get his chance to silence all doubters but if we're 4-4 at the halfway point and Tannehill is sputtering along as usual, I think it is fair to see what Doughty can do.
Doughty may not be the answer but if he matches what RT has done then maybe it's time to move on. He'll be a lot cheaper alternative with upside. I don't think people are anointing Doughty as the next Brady. I do think seeing him scan the field, drift left in the pocket and lay that touch pass to Jakeem Grant right on the sideline coming all the way across the field on 3rd and 8 for a 1st down showed more poise and awareness under pressure than RT has ever shown. RT would not, let me repeat, would not have made that play. The ball would have been forced in to somebody a yard behind the LOS before he ever attempted to drift left and show patience and awareness simultaneously.
Now if our running game and pass protection is fantastic Tannehill can robot his way to an acceptable level of success. If it's a battle and the offense needs him to show some artistry and creativity to overcome a stout opponent, we're sunk. You know it, I know it and every defense and coach in the NFL knows it.

How do we know what Gase accept? He has only coached one preseason game.

"RT would not, let me repeat, would not have made that play. "

RT has also never had the TIME to make that play. Let him play against back up linemen and then tell me he would not make that play. The man has been running for his life for four years so it's ingrained in him now to look for the fastest dump off play he can make.

I agree with what cuch said regarding the Bum quote; if you've got an average guy at QB you'll ALWAYS have a part of the fanbase screaming for the next guy in line...Hell, even if you have an elite QB who's struggling, you'll have at least part of the fanbase banging the drum for the #2..

I'm far from a Tannehill lover (Some would even call me a Tannehill Hater, though i feel my lowly opinion of him is just me being realistic) BUT come on, Doughty's not even currently the #2, we can't even be sure that he's gonna make the final 53 and even if he has the potential to eventually become a solid starter in this league, it won't be this season...

Reminds me of the days when some fans were calling for Scott Mitchell to start over Marino. Some things just defy reason....

Brandon must have that thing Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader have, you know that thing where you put out your hand and send DL backwards...cause unless he does the back up to the back up is going to be popular...

I am with you Matt. Why does this kid have to be either the starter right now or cut! He did what he was supposed to do. He won his level of competition in his first preseason game. Check! I really want to see more from him. I would say he moved up from 4 to 3 last week. If he keeps progressing he may make it to #2 and make the roster by the end of preseason.

I think it would be foolish to project him as RTs replacement for next year if RT struggles this year and the Fins decide to pull the plug before the rest of that contract kicks in. I would be very disappointed (again) if we cut Tannehill after this year and didn't draft a QB in the first half of the first round next year.

I don't think Doughty is ready to be the starter. I just want to see him get more playing time in the preseason and I would like to see him play before Matt Moore and play with and against a better level of competition.

Agree, though he was with the 2s on Tuesday and didn't do much from accounts. Hoping to see him get some of Moore's snaps against Dallas.

              Barry Jackson's take... http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sport...er-stands.html

              • The Dolphins haven’t been inclined to keep a third quarterback on the 53-man roster to start the season in recent years, but rookie seventh-round pick Brandon Doughty is giving the Dolphins incentive to possibly reverse that pattern.

His accuracy, quick mind and poise have impressed coach Adam Gase, who has final say on the 53-man roster.

Doughty was 7 for 9 for 66 yards in the preseason opener against the Giants and “I saw a guy that was very comfortable,” Gase said. “I felt good calling plays for him. I didn’t have any concerns. I wasn’t sitting there [saying], ‘I can’t call this, I can’t call this.’ Watching him react to everything I called, it was like there was nothing that was bothering him.

“He’d get hit, he’d bounce back up, look right at me. I love that part of him and then his progressions were really good. He was always in the right spot, which is good to see [because] it’s different in practice.”

In fact, Gase said Doughty’s performance was atypical of a rookie.

“I’ve been [around] a few times where it looks like, ‘Uh oh, what’s going to happen?’” Gase said. “He was good. He’s been in the shotgun a lot in his career. If there’s one thing that I would say he needs to really work on is just to make sure that he feels comfortable working under center.”

And that’s not the only thing Gase likes about Doughty.

"In this league, that window closes so fast,” Gase said. “As soon as you’re trying to evaluate whether that guy is open or not, he’s probably going to get covered by the time the ball gets there. With him having a great feel of the route concepts and turning the ball loose,… He’s done a great job as far as being that consistent in anticipation.”

Gase said Doughty’s next step is “controlling everybody,” correcting mistakes and correcting mental errors by others..

The Dolphins could put Doughty on the practice squad unless they believe another team would claim him and put him on their 53-man roster.

He has too much potential to expose to the practice squad IMO. If he can continue to improve, I'd have no qualms about cutting Moore and keeping him. This is a good problem to have for this position.

I wonder how much "damage" has been done to Tannehill's psyche at this point, by being the goat the past 4 yrs... Does that account for some of his hesitation before slinging one deep? The ego's of NFL QB's are often fragile things, but they are necessary. Seems that there just isn't time to 2nd guess every throw, before making it...

In addition to some of the new QB drills for avoiding pass rushers in the backfield and improving footwork/keeping feet active, they had Tannehill working on holding onto the ball longer before passing. Really looked at times like they were trying to slow his clock down. In the past, he would have the ball out of his hands around 2.35 seconds. In camp, it was around 2.85. He was also taking deeper passes when throwing to DVP and Griff Whalen.

I think if the OL can actually improve it's play and we have DVP for an entire season AND we can establish a running game, we'll all be happy with the performance of the entire offense.

I also hope that Gase takes the shackles off Tannehill as far as running with the ball. If the defense isn't respecting his ability to run, then screw the play called and take off with it. I don't want to see anymore of Philbin's ''stay in the pocket at all costs'' mentality.

That is alot of ifs, I personally think it will take TH another in this offense before we start seeing much growth, now does he have that time? I dont know

I don't know either... I do know that Philbin shackled him into the pocket and that Lazor wanted the ball out of his hands by the time he reached his drop, whether 3 step or 5 as the play call said where the ball was going pre-hand via the call.

If he plays the same way he did in the Giants game throughout the preseason I don't think he will last on the practice squad. IF he plays the same way I think it would be wise to keep him on the 53 man roster. JMO

For a guy who i initially thought was just a throw-away late round pick he sure seems to have a lot of knowledge & feel for the game...I'd love to get a chance to see him run with the 1's and/or play the majority of one of our preseason games...

If he continues to show the potential of becoming a solid to really good NFL QB, we'd be fools to try & stash him on the PS..BUT this is the Miami Dolphins we're talking about here, just sayin'...........

Noooo... he wasn't a throw away pick at all. I thought he was a 3rd round talent all the way around. Watch his game in college and you see that he easily was as good as 1st round QB, Jared Goff. What hurt Doughty in the draft was a NFL pedestrian arm and a lack of NFL athleticism. But again, in college, he just had a different level of accuracy than the other QBs in this class and can (or could at that level) deliver the football to a spot where a receiver can get it. Gase and Marino both expressed shock and surprise he was there and was still the highest rated guy on our board.

Doughty is a very intelligent guy who processes things quickly and has crazy intangibles. He doesn't have a great arm like Tannehill or Bortles, so he had to learn to throw with greater anticipation at an early age. If it was just all about an arm, guys like Kyle Boller and Jamarcus Russell would be HOF'ers.

Doughty has a very high ceiling IMO and he has great accuracy on his passes. Given his lack of arm strength, he needs a clean pocket to be able to skip into into throws and push the ball down field, but on short and intermediate routes, he's money. His arm is akin to Penny, or the Peyton Manning of the Broncos prior to 2015.

In all, he's borderline on most traits though - height, speed, processing, athleticism, arm, and mobility.

He's had a nice camp and had a nice 1st PS game. I like him a lot, but being realistic (there's that word) Doughty was 7 of 9 for 66 yards in against guys who'll be wearing chicken suits in front of fast food restaurants in another month. He made maybe 2 or 3 really nice plays facing no real pressure. He also fumbled an exchange, took a sack, and had a ball batted on him... he's not punching anyone's ticket just yet... let alone Tannehill's.

I've read people comparing him to Brady and making the leap to this being another Tom brady/ Drew Bledsoe scenario. That's really a reach IMO.
