Anxious for the first game. Sure, I can't wait to see the aqua and orange flying around. And yeah, there are some guys I'm more excited to see than others. But most of all it's the systems check that interests me the most. Starters will play sparingly if at all. Young or new guys (favorites) won't play as much as I'd like. No matter, there will be 60 minutes of football played.
1st stringers, 2nd stringers, 3rd stringers; all will play according to the schemes instilled within the systems. That's how I want to see how we match up. In the past our starters came in and played competitively for their two or three series. Then the second and third stringers came in and looked completely lost and unable to really compete. My impression has been that the systems were awful and it took our best and most skilled and rehearsed to execute them to even a level of mediocrity. I want to see consistency from one group to the next getting to the right places and making plays on the ball. I want the systems to create cohesion regardless of who is on the field and be confident that the whole machine will not break down if one guy steps out and another steps in. I want our systems to prove that they are sophisticated yet simple enough so that our 3rd teamers can kick butt as well as our first teamers. When I see that, I'll start to believe that players lower on the depth chart can rise up and become solid NFL players, even starters. Otherwise I'll continue to realize that our coaches will train young guys how to play stupid with good technique and then scratch their head when they don't see success. And we'll continue our approach of poaching players off of better coached teams rosters hoping to improve our depth, only to force them into our crappy systems and then say, "Hey, this guy is no better than the guy we cut to get him."
Have we become a smarter coached team?
