  • Trade Matt Moore to the Cowboys?

Now that Nick Foles has signed with the Chiefs, the Cowboys are looking for a backup QB for Romo. Matt Moore is regarded as one of the better backup QB's in the NFL and we all know that Romo's injury last year derailed their season.

So how about trading Moore to the Cowboys for DB Brandon Carr? They need a backup QB and we need a competent starting caliber DB. Carr is nothing special but at least he won't get embarrassed like how our many rookie DB's could be. He is in the final year of his contract and is due to make about $6M so there would be no long term investment in him. I think this would be a great trade for both teams.

Brandon Carr is expensive and Moore is cheap. Can we fit his salary in? I believe it's up there like 6mil or something. I met him in real life, rode in my taxi.

Carr's cap number is about $6M and Moore's cap number is $1.4M. We have a little under $13M in cap space so if we made the trade we would still have over $8M in cap space. We could then sign a cheap veteran backup QB like TJ Yates for the vets minimum. Tannehill has started every game since he has been a Dolphin so at least he has been durable.

PFF ranked Brandon Carr #70 last year and think he should move to safety next season.

I like the way you're thinking and it makes sense. I would prefer a veteran opposite Maxwell but apparently that isn't going to happen unless an unlikely trade happens. Joseph is cornerback guru so let's all hope he knows what he's doing and can actually coach up these young players, unlike the previous X amount of coaches that have come through Miami.

I like your thinking on this FTL, and it makes even more sense considering that the Cowboys were seriously interested in Moore during FA, before MM elected to resign with the Fins...As you said Carr hasn't been anything special with the 'Boys but i have to believe he'd be a definite upgrade to anything we currently have on the roster not named Maxwell...

As far as losing our quality #2, i personally believe Matt Moore won't win us many games if he's needed in a pinch, so what difference does it make..I'd rather move on from Moore a year early & go with grooming the young guys like Doughty & Dysert....

This all assume you think Doughty is ready for the number 2 role?

Not me...but i don't think Moore's a guy anymore who is capable of winning if our #1 goes down..so really what difference does it make??

I think it is ridiculous to think that a 7th round pick is ready to take over the starting job. Having said that, I am not too sure he would do much worse then Moore would if he were to go into the game. The last couple times he has come into the game he has not looked like his former self. You know, the guy who comes in guns blazing, makes all the throws and makes you wonder why he isn't starting, then in the 4th quarter he reveals why he is not the starter by making mental errors and throwing picks left and right.

I agree with Driven...last preseason, Moore looked HORRIBLE. He hasn't impressed in camp so far (while Doughty has shown playmaking ability). The games will tell a lot more, but I think we'll struggle if Tannehill misses time. I'd rather struggle with a young guy who shows some long term potential than a vet who looks like he's declining and wouldn't be able to lead the team to wins.

And for the record, I've always kind of liked Matt Moore...I just don't think we can win with him based on what I've seen the last couple seasons.

We still have Zac Dysert as well, who was in a Gase system previously and is familiar with the offense and calls. I like Doughty and think he has a lot of ability. Not sure he's ready for a #2 spot, but Hell, he's no worse than many of the 1st or 2nd round QBs who are carrying clipboards their first season and there was only a couple physical limitations that separated him from Jared Goff and that was 40 time and arm strength.

To his credit, Doughty is just starting to learn the system - but seems to have a knack for making plays/getting completions. If we could get something of value for Moore, I'd be okay with watching for a vet to shake loose, and having Doughty prepare like he would play. I think he'll be a decent backup and I'm looking forward to seeing him in the preseason.

Doughty has incredible vision and a feel for when guys are coming open. He has a weaker arm than Penny did, but his anticipation and timing are really great. Posted a lot of stuff on him a few weeks ago in another thread.

“He can do four things wrong and get a completion out of it,” Christensen said. “So he’s got a nice knack.”

Taken as a seventh-round pick as a project, Doughty is giving Gase and Christensen something to think about while showing why he posted staggering statistics at Western Kentucky: 12,855 career yards, a 68.6 completion percentage and 111 touchdown passes against 34 interceptions.

Moore has looked terrible the past couple years when he got playing time in the preseason. I don't believe he would help us win games so if Tannehill were to go down for an extended period of time our season would be over anyway. Hopefully Moore still has the reputation around the NFL that he is one of the best backup QB's out there. I think trading him to the Cowboys for Brandon Carr makes a lot of sense if the Cowboys would go for it. He is an older corner, 30 I believe, who is on the final year of his contract so he probably doesn't fit into their future plans anyway. He would then be a one year stop gap at a position of need for us.

If we don't believe Doughty is ready to be the backup we can sign a veteran backup QB on the cheap like TJ Yates.

It's funny, i read that Gase had said Doughty seems to make all the wrong progressions but completes the pass anyway...Doughty is really starting to intrigue me, i'm hoping to see a lot of him in preseason...I'm just worried that if he shines it's gonna be awful hard to hide him on the PS.........

Maybe we finally got lucky and found a gem QB in the draft. If he plays well in the preseason we might have to keep him on the 53 man roster. I would not want to risk losing him. I still maintain we should trade Matt Moore for a veteran corner if we can.

I'm definitely on-board with you there..If we could get a decent starting CB for MM it would be crazy to not seriously consider it!

I like the idea of the trade, but I don't think it will happen. If we were going to move on from Moore we would of done it this off season. I would be shocked if it happened.

I would normally agree, but not necessarily as that was before Brandon Doughty started to shine in TC. If they Doughty could be a viable backup this season, then yes, they could *and should* shop Moore IMO.

They've been very complimentary of Doughty and impressed that he's already picked up what of the offense he's been handed as well as understanding what the defenders are doing and how they are reacting to the plays.
