  • Fields Cut?

    ****************************************
    BREAKING NEWS - PLAYER RELEASED
    ****************************************

According to 560 WQAM, Brandon Fields has been released. Apparently, Matt Darr has won the job. Gotta think this was a cap move as much as anything else.
While it takes two to have an argument, it only takes one to walk away.

No one is posting it yet...I know Darr has had a good pre-season, but Fields took a pay cut as well...A little shocked there.

Yea, Mando has tweeted it as well stating that is wasn't a salary cap move but that Darr beat him out for the job. A part of me though believes it probably was a salary cap though they won't come out and say that.

Hahahaha...We don't hit, that's what I tell my kids anyway. LOL I like Fields, but was being paid a lot of money for a punter I actually thought they should have cut him earlier, but he did take a pay cut. Barr and Fields have been pretty even in camp. Barr can boom it and has very good hang time. Much younger and cheaper option, Makes me think they are going to watch cuts for a RG or LT and want to make sure they have cap room.

At least they cut him early so he has a chance to catch on somewhere.

Fields was an unsung hero and I'm sure he will find some work. If it didn't happen this year it was bound to happen next year anyway, I hope the new kid (Darr) has it in him.

WOW. I thought he was safe after he restructured his contract. Losing a lot of good ST experience.

I just hope he doesn't land inside the AFC East...

I think this is a completely boneheaded move. It saves a grand total of $1 million - and puts a rookie back there instead of a pro-bowler who's #4 all time. The "excuse" was that Darr had a higher average - but that's just because he was booming away while Fields was dropping his kicks inside the 10. We know Fields can do the job at a pro bowl level. What can the rookie do late in a game from in his end zone with the all out rush coming???

This could have been a good move IF it was done earlier, to sign a player that really need. I understand that they are probably clearing up some money for guys that are going to be cut but what about the guys who were sitting there in free agency waiting to be signed that could have been signed with or without a move like this. (Mathis and others) Anyway, this was a good move "money wise" and not too surprising see how well Darr was this preseason.

Mixed feeling here. I wanted to keep Fields one more year, and there will be plays this year where we will miss him. However, Darr has looked good and we will need a punter next year. Better to make the move now because of that, and the money.

This was a post June 1 cut. I'm fairly certain that we have $770K in dead money this year. and save $1.750 on the cap. Darr costs $435K. So, along with Delmas, we should be around $13M or more under the cap this year.

For 2016, we tale the same $770K in dead money, and save $3.5M. Darr will cost around $480K. That drops us from being over by $8M to Around $5M.

If they wanted Mathis for the price he was asking to play in Miami they could have afforded him with or without Fields. I wanted Mathis as well, but they didn't seem to. They may not be clearing up cap for this year too and could be clearing it up for next year as they have some tough decisions to make on the roster. As much as everyone is focused on 2015 Hickey and Tannebaum are already looking at 2016.

Yeah, no need to clear space this year. With$13M we could have re-signed Miller, OV, and Mathis as well. I think we just found a punter we liked and did not want to worry about finding a new one next year.

Next year is not a problem. I'll do a closer look to show why.

Looking towards the future is always a good thing, unless your job is on the line THIS YEAR and in my opinion that is the case for this entire staff. I'm glad to finally have people in power who are looking to IMPROVE the FUTURE of the Miami Dolphins. My only concern is that I am not sure they are doing so by improving the present team while doing so. Broken Record Alert but I am really nervous about this offensive line and have been for a long time now. Douglas isn't the answer to ALL the o-line woes. I understand for some strange reason this coaching staff and front office doesn't believe a Pro Bowl guard would have helped improve this team. I already stated that I knew the Dolphins could afford Mathis with or without cutting Fields. They obviously didn't want to sign him. Why? Well, we will probably never know. But, the offensive line is they key to victory this season. It's the key to Tannehill's success and it could very well be the key to why this entire staff is fired if ONE player gets injured and this thing blows up in their faces like an ACME product.

I hope the front office and coaching staff is correct in their decisions to not sign Mathis and not bother signing or drafting anyone noteworthy other than a fourth round pick. I want the best for this team and since it's their job to want the same we as fans have to just have "faith" in them but they have given us little reason for them to be deserving of our faith. Let's hope they are correct because I would like nothing more then to eat a giant piece of BBQ Crow at the end of the season.
