I like this signing. Only a year from what I've seen, but this guy will add much needed depth to our DE position. He should have been in a 4-3 system and didn't fare as well in Jax's 3-4. We now have Wake, Super Mario, Domatre Moore (from Giants last year), Fede, McCain, and potentially Dion Jordon and a high draft pick (SHAQ LAWSON PLEASE). I like the mix of vets and young players. Suddenly DE is a position of good depth and looks better on paper than it did last year. I can imagine Wake, Williams sliding inside, Suh, and Lawson wreaking havoc on opposing QB's.

I like this move. He has a lot of upside as a pass rusher. He has 14 sacks in 12 career starts. He had 4 sacks last year in only 10 starts which was only 3 fewer than OV had for the season. He will be a good addition to the rotation so we can keep Williams and Wake fresh. With Moore Fede and McCain we actually have some quality depth.
I think Dion Jordan should be moved to OLB where he would most effective and where we need him the most. He is basically a bigger Myles Jack.

Never place hopes on a drug fiend (Jordan)

@Hawk - what illegal drugs? He was busted for PEDs, not illegal, just banned substances, the same as Reshad Jones was. DJ was just busted twice while bulking up for the team, then had a muddled urine test. Both his trainer and Alonso both have said he's been working out and intends on coming back. If you have something saying he was busted for an illegal substance, post it...

I like the move... OV had 7.5 sacks cleaning up behind Suh and Wake. Branch had 4 sacks, with 2 of them and a forced fumble in the last 4 games. If we can more get from him in a 4-3 with this cast, which I think we will, this is a steal at $3M this season.
If we do go DE with Lawson, or similar, in the 1st, then our DL is going to be sick, especially as next season, we'll have $70+ million in Cap space, all our draft picks + 3 Comp picks to sign premier FAs and upgrade the roster across the board.

I am all for Lawson at #13. Wake wont be around much longer and while I have hopes coming off his injury we really don't know, besides at this point he should be used as a situational pass rusher. I have always said a great pass rush makes a weak secondary look good and a bad pass rush makes a great secondary look average...YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH PASS RUSHERS.
I love the thought of Wake, Williams, Suh, Branch, Phillips, Lawson, and Fede. If Jordan comes back and is used correctly (which I think he would be) we may actually see the potential he has.
I'd like to see them bring in another Vet corner, but there are starting corners available in round two. I think Fuller, Burns, Howard and Redmond (keep an eye on him, he's not flashy, but very solid and technically sound as a corner) could all step in and start day one (assuming Fuller and Redmond are recovered from injury).

Hey man. Good to see you posting more... and completely agree.
I think the goal is to be competitive this season while Gase and Joseph evaluate the roster, with the eye on 2017 and beyond.
Wish like hell we were doing Hard Knocks this year.
I'd draft the entire Clemson Defense if I could. lol...

Spoiler alert! No WAY this team drafts DE with the first pick. So forget Lawson. They go either OL, DB, LB or RB. Depends on who is there. They have already acquired way too many D Lineman via FA. Some big additional needs. If Heargraves is there or similar they go DB. Eziekel RB etc. Depends on who is left. Mack LB?

I don't know that I agree. First you can never have too many pass rushers. Secondly they need to draft Wakes and Williams replacement sooner than later as both could be gone next season.
Here's what I think... If Hargreaves slides to #13 which many drafts now have him sliding down past that pick I believe they will draft him. Right now secondary is way too unproven and young. The failure to add a vet really means a CB is high priority in this years draft. With that said I think they'll target one in the 2nd round if Hargreaves is already off the board. Personally I think it's too early for Apple or Mac, but then again if one of those players is picked at #13 I won't have a problem with it because it is such a huge need. I can actually see them picking the Ohio State RB if he slides to #13. I wouldn't love that pick but the fact is the kid is a super talent and probably the most ready player in the draft to start day one and make an impact. Our RB situation also needs to be addressed. I don't see a lineman with that pick, mainly because we need a guard and that is just too high for any of the guard prospects. Could definately see them picking up a LB. The kid from Ohio state is gaining some traction. Also Regland should still be on the board. With Alonzo's injuries and the terrible play of our LB's last season this is another huge priority. That's my 2 cents. Feel free to keep the change.Last edited by Idahomer; 03-18-2016, 06:39 PM.

I agree with Ted... if we go BPA, which we should, DE could just as easily be the pick as CB or anything else. It all depends on who is there when we pick.
Also, several of the DEs we've signed are 1 year deals with no real commitment.
YMMV.

I think BPA in Football is real hard to define. In the NBA draft, there are only 5 positions, and with the modern NBA game the strict definitions of those positions are merging (shooting guard, combo guard), and morphing (Power Forward, 'Stretch 4") In the NFL, there is no universal measurement of players across positions, and there are about 7 completely different positions to sort out. Not many teams can afford to pick a player based on BPA ranking independent of position. IMO, BPA should be selected from areas of need, so right there BPA is out the window. What I believe teams do try to do, is rank by position, rank position need, and then decide if taking the #3 ranked cornerback at the #1 ranked position of need, is better than taking the #1 ranked RB, at the #4 ranked position of need.....
BTW, can anyone tell me if we lost or gained a Round 4 pick from the Eagles trade? I cant seem to find the final word."ESSE QUAM VIDERI"

I largely agree, but the NFL positions are also ''weighed''... as you're already aware, QBs, CBs, LTs, and DEs, are the most weighed. Hence why they are always at the top of the draft. When going for BPA, teams typically filter thru these positions first.
I think you should always draft for the best player available and not draft for need. Reaching for picks what has hurt us the most the past 15 years or so...
There was no other picks traded or exchanged. We got 2 starters and the #13. The Eagles lost 2 starters from last year for the #8.
For what we would have paid Grimes in salary, we are paying both Maxwell and Alonso and turned 1 pick into 3 possible starters. I see it as a win for us given that the Eagles gave up Maxwell and Kiko, and didn't accumulate a single extra pick. They created 2 holes and didn't fill 1.
It's really going to be a hindsight trade...
If Maxwell and Alonso both suck, it's a horrible trade.
If we blow the 13th pick and the Eagles strike on a good starter, it's a horrible trade for us.
If we get a solid starter at 13 and either player plays well it was as a great trade for us.
If Maxwell plays better in a scheme suited to him and Alonso plays well it was a steal for us.
If Maxwell plays better in a scheme suited to him and Alonso plays well and we get an excellent pick at #13, the Eagles fans are going to have a meltdown.
YMMV.

Sounds about right Cuch. At 13 i am starting to warm up to Ragland as a consolation prize for Jack, and now that we have Alonzo.. i cant make heads or tails outta the CB rankings, but just figure the top 2 Safety/CBs will be gone by 13. Lawson is also an intriguing pick, but damn we have already addressed that DE position. Ooops, there goes thinking about position needs again....i will give myself a Timeout"ESSE QUAM VIDERI"
