    Who's watching? Thoughts on players?

  • #2
I am watching some of it. The WR's are not very impressive this year. Will Fuller seems to be the best WR there. Its a good thing we took Devante Parker last year so WR is not a need for us.

It will be interesting to see later when the DB's perform.

What about Christian Hackenberg in the 5th round? He supposedly has all the physical skills to be a very good QB. He has regressed though since his good freshman season. That might have a lot to do with a regression of talent around him. Everyone seems to think the Texans are going to take him. It would be good if they took another QB in the early rounds which might allow him to drop to the 5th round. If he was on the board when we select in the 5th round I would take a chance on him.

Texans will be more than likely taking him long before the 5th round.

Wasn't impressed with most of the WRs nor the QBs...

They were dogging Doughty's lack of arm strength but he was hitting WRs in stride and showed very good footwork IMO. Allen and Adams also helped themselves.

Lynch had bad medical exams. Problems with both knees and a clavicle injury and bone chips were reported.

Goff's lower body needs work. Looks like RG3's...

Weak QB class overall from the outside. Adams was intriguing.

Hackenberg's accuracy was poor in the drills I thought. He was high and WRs had to work hard to bring them in.

WR class is slow but they can catch. I didn't see very many dropped passes. I watched a little bit of the RBs but not enough to give an opinion. Nobody really standing out for me from what I've seen so far.

Agree... saw some nice hands from the WR class, but nothing else. Really haven't seen anyone on the offensive side of the ball that made you stand up and take notice.

Imho, if there is one overrated drill at the combine it would be evauating a WR based on him playing catch in his shorts. You have to truly override this and rely primarily on the tape. Put them in game pads, game conditions with lights and cheerleadrrs flashing, getting bumped and smacked by DBs and LBs, and running their routes with 22 players going nuts.....then we can see if they hold onto the ball and run good routes. Sure you could say this about any position but the pass catching seems to me to be one area where it is mostly show, and you are only watching for a meltdown if i was a coach i would expect them to catch almost everything.

You can make the shorts vs pads argument about most skill positions... but regardless either a guy catches with his hands or not. I liked the WE gauntlet drill. Hands catchers easily stood out.

Treadwell is a beast in pads though.

Yeah, I guess you'd have to be a real dummy to show up at the combine and let some passes hit your chest when the QB is laying it in there, no pressure. Treadwell is a beast, I agree. But, I sure am glad we picked up Parker last year. As someone else already noted, this WR class is not the best. Bring on the LBs, CBs, and Safeties!!!

Yeah... combine is about providing an even opportunity where everyone is competing in the same events the same way, running the same routes, making the same throws from the same drops, etc... not perfect, not game conditions, but as even a ''playing field'' as they can make it and like with the military basic training - weeding out people and seeing who rises to the challenge both physically and mentally.

Really deep DE and LB class. Not feeling it on the CBs and Safeties so much. If we grab Hargreaves, Ramsey, or Jack in the first, we'll be able to find a quality pass rusher and more LBs later on.
