    Mike Mayocks thoughts:

  • #2
Per Mayock: Targets should be Hargreaves, Jack, Smith, Spence...

    ### With the NFL Combine starting, I asked NFL Network's Mike Mayock on a conference call today about what would make sense with Miami's pick at No. 8. He seemed most enthusiastic about Florida cornerback Vernon Hargreaves.
If Hargreaves "went 8th to Miami, it would be a heck of a pick," Mayock said. "He's that good. The most natural corner in the draft is Hargreaves. Great feet, change of direction, can play press, can play off. There's going to be a lot of conversation about whether [FSU's] Jalen Ramsey is a corner or safety.

"[As far as] linebackers, in the 4-3 type group, Myles Jack should be healthy. He and Jaylon Smith [whose 2016 status is in question after knee surgery] are by far the two best linebackers in that situation. A guy I think has gained a lot of steam in the last month is Darron Lee from Ohio State. He's kind of a weak outside linebacker. He probably will run in the 4.4s and everyone is going to get all excited about Darron Lee. He's more of a 20 to 32 [first-round range] guy for me. But he's going to go in the first round and he fits what Miami does.

"As far as edge guys are concerned, defensive end [Joey] Bosa is probably gone. Then you get into [Eastern Kentucky's] Noah Spence. I think he fits a 3-4 team a little bit better [than Miami's 4-3]. But in today's day and age, an edge rusher is an edge rusher."
    ### The Dolphins want to re-sign linebacker Spencer Paysinger, who had 25 tackles and played well on special teams in 14 games. Jelani Jenkins, Zach Vigil and Neville Hewitt are the other linebackers seemingly most likely to return. The Dolphins want to upgrade over free agent Kelvin Sheppard and under-contract Koa Misi remains at risk.
Not familiar with Darron Lee, but definitely need a LB or two in this draft.

I am worried that either the Jaguars or the Ravens are going to take Hargreaves. If he is available to us then I would take him. If not then I would either take Spence if we didn't resign OV or look to trade down.

Would not be upset with VH at #8, but I think we need a LB to take advantage of Suh in his prime...and our LBs are dogmeat. Here is my noodling (couldn't resist draft stuff, and I am over my Dolphins pout..for now)

        1. Myles Jack LB, UCLA: have you seen this guy cover? Truly Scary good athleticism. No more tearing our hair out about TEs eating our lunch, as they have since dirt was new
        2. William Jackson, CB Houston: Big, rangy guy. 6' 2", 195. 23 PBU his senior year + 5 ints.. What can you say...he is around the ball..has to be. 40 PBU, and 8 Ints in 3 years..not bad. Should be there R2 so why not. We be needin cornerbacks big time.
        3. Cody Whitehair, G, Kansas State: Everybody seems to like this guy, athletic with size. If we can get him in the 3rd, get some beef. We need like 10 Guards. Maybe the NFL will let us play that many to get some protection and push.
        4. Cardale Jones, QB, Ohio State. The anti Ryan. Howitzer for an arm, run over CBs at 250lbs., can learn the position, run the...get ready for it...Wildcat...lol, just a hunch but I have seen him play and was just impressed. Hes a winner. Probably be gone, but in the 4th..All day I would make that pick.
        5. Casanova Mckinzy, ILB Auburn. For the name alone, but at 6'3", 253 he racked up 29.5 TFLs, 8.5 sacks, and 2 ints and top tackler with 79......why not, big guy, big program.
        6. Top Safety or CB
        7. Top Tackle
        8. Top DL/DE

lol... Agree on Cassanova. He struggled some at Auburn, but they moved him around between MLB, WLB, and DE/OLB. He had a sprained knee as well. Great size on him and can stuff the run. I like Martinez better but for a middle round guy, he's got the attributes you want to develop.

If Jack is healthy heading into the draft and he and Hargreaves both are there when we pick, it's going to be a very tough decision for sure.

This draft looks deep on DE and LB. CB not so much.
