  • Running Backs Coach Hired

The biggest criticism of Dolphins coach Adam Gase’s new staff has been this: not enough high-level experience.

Well how’s this for experience: the Dolphins’ new running backs coach has been a head coach in the Canadian Football League and the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision.

His name is Danny Barrett, and Gase recently hired him, the Miami Herald confirmed Saturday, bringing an experienced coach back to South Florida.

Barrett, 54, is a Boynton Beach native who played in college at Cincinnati and professionally in the CFL.

After his playing days ended, Barrett went into coaching. He moved up quickly, going from an assistant in Canada to the head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders — a job he held for seven seasons.

Barrett later was a position coach at both the University at Buffalo and the University of Central Florida, and served briefly as interim coach of the Golden Knights when George O’Leary announced his retirement late in the 2015 season.

Barrett inherits a position in flux. Lamar Miller, who has led the Dolphins in rushing in each of the past three seasons, will become a free agent if the Dolphins don’t sign him to an extension by March. Jay Ajayi, who rushed for 187 yards in his rookie season, is in line for the starting job if Miller leaves.

I thought the article was misleading.

Barrett was an INTERM head coach..............of the University of Central Florida............AND unless I am totally mistaken.........they did NOT win a single game all season.

When you couple that great head coaching stint with his Canadian Football League experience, WOW, they just landed a great coach.

His interim HC experience was only for 4 games though. His HC experience in Canada was worse IMO...

Conversely, he's a former QB and was the Stampeders QB coach while Jeff Garcia was there and helped him improve to the point of transitioning to the NFL...

These coaching hires all seem to have QB coaching experience. It's really strange. It's like Gase went out and looked to find a position coach that also had QB coaching experience. It seems Gase has brought in a TEAM of quarterback coaches to makes sure his plan to improve Tannehill this year does not fail. Aha I wish him well and hope he succeeds.

If that's the case it once again sounds like a guy putting all of his eggs in one basket...Just like we said about Philbin & Co's ultimate demise would come from counting on the OFFENSIVE line they assembled, it almost sounds like Gase is putting all of his money on RT to win..Sometimes i wish these guys wouldn't read their own press clippings....

It could be a coincidence, something that I normally never believe in, but I couldn't help but notice that it seems every coach that has been hired used to be a QB coach and then changed their positions sometime during their coaching career. I don't think Gase would hire these guys because they 'used to be QB coaches', I think it is actually just a coincidence. These guys don't have the time to all do their jobs AND try and groom a quarterback. Tannehill does need work but he doesn't need a team of guys to come in and try and fix him. With a good offensive line a good, or even halfway decent QB coach, should be able to work with Tannehill and fix his mechanics and teach him how to better read defenses and from there work on his pocket presence and other issues, IF Grier does his job this should be Tannehill's year to prove he was worth the wait.

I can't help but think of the cartoon " Commander Mcbrag" the short from the Bullwinkle series where he Brags about unbelievable War Heroics. I can see all these QB guRus sorrounding RT and reminding him of all their own Heroics back in the day hehehe.

P.s. learned a new Word today ( nincompoop ) kinda knew what it meant but wanted to know the origin cause its such a funny sounding word. A picture of Roger Goodell popped up hehehe.

Aqua, you just described most people's worst nightmare, being surrounded everyday by a bunch of Joe Theismen clones reminiscing about their glory days. That guy bothers me so much. I stopped watching him year ago. His constant need to bring himself up and his years in the NFL while he is supposed to be talking about current players bothered me so much that I won't watch any game he is involved with.
