The biggest criticism of Dolphins coach Adam Gase’s new staff has been this: not enough high-level experience.
Well how’s this for experience: the Dolphins’ new running backs coach has been a head coach in the Canadian Football League and the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision.
His name is Danny Barrett, and Gase recently hired him, the Miami Herald confirmed Saturday, bringing an experienced coach back to South Florida.
Barrett, 54, is a Boynton Beach native who played in college at Cincinnati and professionally in the CFL.
After his playing days ended, Barrett went into coaching. He moved up quickly, going from an assistant in Canada to the head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders — a job he held for seven seasons.
Barrett later was a position coach at both the University at Buffalo and the University of Central Florida, and served briefly as interim coach of the Golden Knights when George O’Leary announced his retirement late in the 2015 season.
Barrett inherits a position in flux. Lamar Miller, who has led the Dolphins in rushing in each of the past three seasons, will become a free agent if the Dolphins don’t sign him to an extension by March. Jay Ajayi, who rushed for 187 yards in his rookie season, is in line for the starting job if Miller leaves.
