  • Doug Marrone

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that some Browns players are “concerned” about the possibility of Jaguars OL coach Doug Marrone being hired as the team’s next head coach.

According to Cabot, there are some Browns players who may decide they don’t want to deal with the situation, unless the teams assures them that Marrone has changed.

Cabot adds that some of Marron’s former players saw his coaching approach as more “college-oriented than pro.”

With this in mind, Cabot mentions that players such as LT Joe Thomas, who has already said that he plans to wait and see who the next coach is before deciding whether to ask for a trade, C Alex Mack or RT Mitchell Schwartz could consider moving on.

I wonder how UFA FS Tashaun Gipson feels about this.

Read into what you want, doesn't look like someone did there homework again, gotta turn off the Idiot Tube and do your homework, but that would be too hard, so they'll just get their info from ESPN and the NFL Network....

But I agree, one has to believe if this happens, Gipson would be much more open to talks than he was two days ago....

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, citing multiple sources, reports that the idea of pairing former Bills HC Doug Marrone as the Dolphins head coach with Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator has been mentioned as a “viable” possibility.

Salguero points out that VP Mike Tannenbaum got to know Marrone when both were with the Jets and Tannenbaum reportedly reached out to Schwartz camp after the Dolphins fired DC Kevin Coyle.

Marrone is expected to be a popular coaching candidate in the coming weeks after he opted out of his contract with the Bills, but was forced to take an assistant role with the Jaguars.

Adding Schwartz as defensive coordinator could be a big boost for the team’s defense, as he had a lot of success working with Marrone in Buffalo. Beyond that Schwartz has had success working with big-ticket free agent DT Ndamukong Suh during their time together in Detroit.

This is one of the reasons I don't like Tannenbutt, too many (NY Connections), always retreading crap and hoping the next time will work....

(Marrone is expected to be a popular coaching candidate in the coming weeks)

After reading what I have, why is my question? But I already know the answer.....

I LOVE the idea of hiring Schwartz as the DC, but I don't think the balance would be there with Marrone as the head coach. I wish the Dolphins could sign Schwartz without Marrone. A Shanahan/Schwartz coaching pairing looks good to me but they have no ties together that I know about.

Yup. I've followed Cabot for a couple of years during the silly season and times in the hopes we land Gipson. She has the insight on the Clowns.

Marrone did a pretty good job in his short stint at Buffalo but his deciding to up & leave with no indication he was even thinking about it is just too 'SABAN-esque' for my tastes! I'm sure Schwartz would love another HC opportunity but i haven't heard his name mentioned once..I'd probably be okay with him as DC, though i think he's an UBER-****..I'd rather go with Detroits Austin as DC (OC choice is a bit trickier!), paired with maybe Shanahan (I've never been a HUGE Shanahan fan, but do like his no-nonsense approach!

Not sure how I feel about Shanny the Rat, I have him 3rd in line right now, and I know his stint with Washington was a Snider joke, but you're right about his no-nonsense approach, and I believe he could bring in top OC and DC help....so I won't be upset at him taking the HC spot here, if he fails he'll probably have a pretty good OC or DC that could take over, but I personally believe he'll bring this team up the ladder...

yeah, under other circumstances Shan the Rat wouldn't even be on my list (I never could stand the guy) but he's one of the few guys that i believe fits the criteria of what this Miami team needs right now...

No doubt, instead of players leaving the Dolphins and then looking good, players will be playing at their potential as a Dolphin, which is what you are saying this this needs right now....

Or players will be so used to playing pussified football they'll opt out & leave! hey just thought of something funny, be pretty ironic if we hire the rat to right the ship but all the other's are leaving like rats from a sinking ship, lol...

Your feeling about Schwartz being a **** is exactly how I feel about Shanny but still Shanny is my first choice for HC because he seems to be exactly what we need. We all complain about the O-line and the running game, he WILL fix both those areas.
While it takes two to have an argument, it only takes one to walk away.

yeah, i've ALWAYS felt the same way about Shanny the Rat as well (Couldn't stand the guy when he was with the Broncos!) But if he can bring half the success here that he had with Denver's O-Line & run game i've gotta say i'm singin' a different tune these days!

            Who's on first?

Bowles with the Fins, now HC with the jets
Rex with the jets, now HC with the Bills
Marrone with the Bills, now HC candidate with the Fins
McDaniels and Patricia with the Pats, now potential candidates...

            Weird division we're in... lol...

I'm getting of the opinion every team looking for a HC, has burned through so many head coaches. They are scared to make a move. They don't know what to do since none of them have wrapping around them saying guaranteed SB. Panic city is going to reign once one team finally pulls the trigger.

I'm getting the feeling we've seen this movie before. The Dolphins are going to hire a head coach that they think will get the most out of their worthless quarterback. He will not be qualified for the head coaching position and he will not be able to bring any coordinators that will be able to make a difference, but none of that matters when all you want to do is prove that you are correct about a worthless QB who you believe in. This organization is doomed as long as they have this mindset. IF they want to surprise the fanbase they will hire an experienced coach who can actually assemble a coaching staff that also has NFL experience too, Time will tell whether the Dolphins current front office really wants to turn this ship around or if they want to help the Titanic sink to the bottom of the football ocean with Tannehill at the helm.

It's a 4 year or so commitment regardless. I'd rather the team take their time, meet with all the candidates, then hire someone in the next few weeks. Hopefully we hire someone competent who can hire competent coordinators and relate to the players.

I'm still leaning towards Shanny, Smith, or Coughlin.

I'm not sure about 4 years, seems that teams just don't wait that long any more...

I could live with Shanny, but Coughlin...oh man, he'll be dead before that draft....

Here's a copy and paste of what I said 5 hours ago.

"Agree on Shanny. I do not like the man, I think he's a total ****, but I also think he is the best answer for this team. Mike Smith would be my second choice, followed by Coughlin, Jackson, and Campbell."
