  • Man, we could sure use about 50 guys like this!

Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has continued to play well this year, earning his fourth straight Pro Bowl invitation last night. But this one hasn’t been as easy as the first three, as he admitted he’s been playing hurt all season.According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, McCoy said he suffered a torn rotator [more]

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, McCoy said he suffered a torn rotator cuff in Week Two. He also dealt with a broken left hand, and missed one game after surgery for that, but leads the team with 7.5 sacks.
“I was quoted as saying this has been my toughest year mentally,” McCoy said. “I’ve been playing all year with a torn rotator cuff. I’m not a guy to make excuses. When people say I’m not doing this and I’m not doing that, I never attacked anyone. I just said I need to be better.
“I love this team, and I love this game, and anything it takes to be out there, I’m going to do it. That’s just me.”

Can you imagine playing tackle football with a torn rotator cuff?..Can you imagine playing NFL football at a high level with a torn rotator cuff??, that is as his teammate Doug Martin puts it "the epitome of toughness...Seems the Miami Dolphins can rarely find guys like this..We get the guys who get carted off because they stubbed their toe or go on IR with hurt feelings...If we can ever get to the point where we can properly identify quality talent and piece together an NFL quality roster with a handful of guys like Gerald McCoy, then & only then will we see the Miami Dolphins finally make a U-Turn and start climbing back up towards playing respectable, competitive football...

I tore both a tricep and a rotator cuff over a decade ago in right arm back when I thought I could be the next Dorian Yates. Painful, but not debilitating. My inner elbow where I tore the long Tricep head still hurts like a SOB when I lift something heavy, especially in the winter. I'm sure lots of teams, and probably our own, has guys fighting similar injuries this season.

Agree with the sentiment though - especially on guys being mentally tough. Some can overcome physical pain, some can't. Talent trumps all though. No matter how tough someone is, they still have to have talent. As for the team, we lack some talent at key positions and mostly lack quality depth.

Hope we fix all this in the next 2 seasons.

I'm going through some similar shoulder problems right now (going to the Ortho next week to try and find out exactly what's going on) i feel i've got a really high tolerance to pain (I'm married, with kids AND a longtime Dolphins fan!!!) but certain sudden movements about bring me to my knees..I can't imagine doing what McCoy is doing on a weekly basis...

I'm not sure i believe we have more than a few guys on this team that fight through similar injuries,, this team has the feel of a very weak-minded group, & just like a losing mentality that shit is contagious...

I agree that talent trumps all...but what's worse than anything is talent with no heart....

Hope you're shoulder injury isn't anything serious.

Agree on heart as well. Always think of Zach Thomas when I think of players with heart who overcame physical limitations.

'preciate it cuch,, yeah i hope as well..SUCKS getting old!!!

yeah buddy, ol' ZT was a rare breed...Sucks that even when we were fortunate enough to hit the jackpot on certain picks, we ALWAYS failed them in the end by never building a playoff team around them!

There are not many players in the league that would play injured like that. I don't think it's just the Dolphins that have players that get injured often. Many players around the league would prefer to just pick up a paycheck, play video games and smoke weed.

It pisses you off when you think about it because there are thousands upon thousands of players that would kill to have the opportunity that these guys have. I think the NFL should get stricter on their off the field rules and start throwing players out of the league that can't keep their nose clean. Drugs? Banned! Beat any woman? Banned! Etc.
