  • Meet Tight End Gerell Robinson

As tight end Gerell Robinson continues his summer quest to earn a roster spot with the Dolphins, he can look back to a conversation with a Hall of Famer as the catalyst for being in this position.
It was two summers ago and the Denver Broncos had just wrapped up their preseason schedule against the Arizona Cardinals with a 32-24 loss during which Robinson scored a 25-yard touchdown.

Robinson was a 6-foot-4 wide receiver back then, but that changed after he got a visit from Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, who was then the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations before he added the title of general manager the following year.

Elway informed Robinson that the Broncos were moving him to tight end.

“He put it in a way that made sense to me, so I had no problem making the move,” Robinson said. “And it’s paid off so far.

“He kind of just used a similarity between myself and Shannon Sharpe and what he was able to do. Everybody knows how Shannon Sharpe played throughout his career. I’m fortunate he did because there’s a lot of receivers that come in and out and there are a lot of athletic receivers, but there aren’t a lot of athletic tight ends with some of my skill traits.”

Robinson showed off some of his skills Saturday night during the Dolphins’ preseason game against the Carolina Panthers when he took a short pass from Josh Freeman late in the fourth quarter and turned it into a 56-yard touchdown.

If he keeps impressing he could very well be our 3rd TE. Thats shaping up to be a position we are in good shape at.

I'm definitely intrigued by him & if he could be half the player Shannon Sharpe was at TE we'd better think about finding a spot on the roster for him!

I am just so happy about what this front office has been doing in regards to the tight end position. I have been waiting, dreaming of a time when this team would finally focus on the tight end position and find a QUALITY tight end that can wreak havoc on opposing defenses. The Dolphins haven't had a tight end like that in over 20 years. Now, they might have THREE tight ends that can do exactly that. I am really liking what I have seem from Sims lately and I already know what Cameron can do. If Robinson can play anywhere near what Sharpe did then we are set at the position.

I think that kind of comparison is pretty strong at this point (kind of like describing the new Lion's tailback as like Barry Sanders)....but I do like what I've seen from Robinson. He's more of a receiving TE than a blocker but until Jordan Cameron can show he can stay healthy, I think its good to have another seam threat. Hope we can stick Semisch on the practice squad though...
