As tight end Gerell Robinson continues his summer quest to earn a roster spot with the Dolphins, he can look back to a conversation with a Hall of Famer as the catalyst for being in this position.
It was two summers ago and the Denver Broncos had just wrapped up their preseason schedule against the Arizona Cardinals with a 32-24 loss during which Robinson scored a 25-yard touchdown.
Robinson was a 6-foot-4 wide receiver back then, but that changed after he got a visit from Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, who was then the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations before he added the title of general manager the following year.
Elway informed Robinson that the Broncos were moving him to tight end.
“He put it in a way that made sense to me, so I had no problem making the move,” Robinson said. “And it’s paid off so far.
“He kind of just used a similarity between myself and Shannon Sharpe and what he was able to do. Everybody knows how Shannon Sharpe played throughout his career. I’m fortunate he did because there’s a lot of receivers that come in and out and there are a lot of athletic receivers, but there aren’t a lot of athletic tight ends with some of my skill traits.”
Robinson showed off some of his skills Saturday night during the Dolphins’ preseason game against the Carolina Panthers when he took a short pass from Josh Freeman late in the fourth quarter and turned it into a 56-yard touchdown.
